Section 179 Tax Deduction for Business Vehicles and Equipment

at Gaudin Ford Pro Elite in Las Vegas
WHAT Is Section 179?

Section 179 is a provision of the U.S. tax code that allows qualifying businesses to deduct the cost of eligible equipment and certain business-use vehicles purchased or financed during the tax year. Rather than depreciating the entire cost of qualifying equipment over several years, a business may be able to deduct some or all of the eligible purchase price in the year the property is placed in service, subject to applicable IRS rules and limitations.

WHO Is Eligible for Section 179?

Section 179 generally applies to businesses that purchase or finance qualifying new or used equipment for business use. The property must meet IRS eligibility requirements and generally must be acquired for use in the active conduct of a trade or business. For a vehicle purchase, business-use requirements and vehicle-specific limitations can also apply.

HOW Does the Section 179 Deduction Work?

Ordinarily, businesses recover the cost of qualifying equipment through depreciation over an applicable recovery period. Section 179 can allow an eligible business to elect to expense qualifying property instead, potentially accelerating the tax deduction into the year the equipment is placed in service.

ARE There Section 179 Limits?

Section 179 is subject to annual limits and phase-out rules. A maximum Section 179 deduction of $2,560,000 for 2026 and a $4,090,000 phase-out threshold for qualifying equipment purchases. These limits can affect how much a business may expense when purchasing substantial amounts of equipment during the tax year.
